Johns Hopkins University School Vision Advocate in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a School Vision Advocate (SVA) who will be hired by the Vision for Baltimore project to support elementary and middle schools in providing vision care to students and encouraging the use of glasses by students.

The SVA will be assigned 15-20 schools, which s/he will work with throughout the school year. S/he will be responsible for making contact with the school, building relationships with the administration, staff and parents at the school. The SVA will also be responsible for training and overseeing the parent volunteers at each school. The SVA will collect the data in each school about students’ use of their prescribed glasses.

NOTE: For consideration, the ideal candidate MUST BE LOCALLY BASED IN BALTIMORE CITY OR SURROUNDING METROPOLITAN AREA. This position involves local travel; therefore, the ideal candidate must have reliable transportation to travel to assigned locations.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • There are several different components to this project, which include,

  • Health department screening, Vision to Learn exams, delivery of glasses, and supporting use of glasses.

  • The SVA will be present for at least a portion of each of these stages of service delivery.

  • The SVA role during these events is that of preparation, assistance, and problem solving.

  • The SVA will help schools be prepared for the visits by the Health Department and Vision to Learn.

  • The SVA will be crucial during the collection of consents for vision exams from parents; this will require calling parents, talking to parents before and after school to ensure that parents receive, understand and respond to the consent form.

  • TheSVA will assist the school with monitoring and troubleshooting any issues that arise related to the glasses, including identifying students that may need glasses replaced as well as fitting and repairing glasses.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Be able to pay attention to details.

  • Ability to multi-task and work well in a team setting and take instructions from coworkers and supervisors.

  • Strong command of English language.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

  • Experience with PowerPoints, Google Drive, and Social Media.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.

  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health-related or education field.

  • Prior experience working with elementary/middle school students.

  • Prior experience in community partnerships/advocacy.
