Johns Hopkins University Laboratory Technician in Baltimore, Maryland
The Department of International Health- Human Nutrition is seeking a Laboratory Technician .
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Assist with a variety of laboratory assays in support of a large, ongoing trial of micronutrient interventions among women of reproductive age being conducted in rural Bangladesh.
Assist with the receipt of biospecimens, conduct routine ELISAs and other 96-well plate assays, and assist with sample preparation steps for biospecimens undergoing high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis under the supervision of a liquid chromatography expert.
Will be responsible for consolidating laboratory output from HPLC and 96-well plate readers and potentially other instrument types into spreadsheets and monitoring the quality of the data. Routine, but requires a high level of concentration and attention to detail.
Must work efficiently and independently on some tasks and work well as part of a team on others.
Must be able to document procedures and assist in generating laboratory SOPs.
May be assigned to other laboratory duties as needed, including tracking inventory and potentially supporting other assay platforms (automatic clinical chemistry analyzer and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer, ICP-MS) under the auspices of experts who are running and maintaining those instruments.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic laboratory experience with pipetting and preparing reagents.
Knowledge of sample preparation procedures and liquid chromatography (LC).
General knowledge of analytical chemistry equipment, processes, and procedures.
Some data analysis skills in Excel, R, or Stata with mathematical literacy.
Educational background in nutrition, chemistry, biochemistry or other life sciences.
Internal and external contacts required as part of the job. Will work under the supervision of other laboratory personnel, so must be able to work well as part of a team; may need to contact vendors or technical support personnel; internally might need to contact Facilities or work with administrative personnel
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or graduation equivalent with some science coursework.
Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred. Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- BS with laboratory experience or Master’s degree in lieu of post-baccalaureate experience.
