JOB OBJECTIVE: To leverage extensive expertise in architecture and strategic planning as a Director Level II Architect, leading initiatives to drive organizational innovation and effectiveness. Responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of capital and historic preservation projects that align with the THC agency mission, business objectives, and enhanced operational efficiency. Collaborates closely with executive leadership, cross-functional teams, and external stakeholders to deliver exemplary architectural solutions across a variety of specialized project types. Serves as a senior management member of staff with minimal supervision and the highest ability for initiative and independent judgement. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 1. Develop plans for building preservation and visitor facilities, including construction documents for repair and restoration of historic structures to ensure compliance with sound architectural practices, historic preservation standards, and applicable codes and regulations. 2. Contract for and oversee the development of architectural plans and specifications for new facilities and historic structures. 3. Evaluate the condition of historic buildings and sites and prepares plans and reports describing their condition. Develop potential strategies for restoration or repair, prioritizes work needed and provides budget estimates. 4. Develop program-wide priorities in consultation with Division Director. 5. Assist site managers with projects affecting historic structures and contemporary facilities. 6. Develop training opportunities and promotes good building stewardship, including training and assistance with cyclical maintenance plans. 7. Maintain data on historic buildings including historic information and documentation of building improvement projects. 8. Supervise and oversee work of staff assigned to the preservation architecture program. 9. Coordinate development of site maintenance and development priorities and budgets with Division Director, site supervisors, site managers and other program staff. 10. Adhere to established work schedule with regular attendance. 11. Follow all THC safety guidelines/procedures and ethics requirements. NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 12. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a professional degree in Architecture Knowledge and full understanding of the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Experience in project management, construction oversight, and facilities maintenance practices. Work experience serving in a supervisory or management role. Valid drivers license, acceptable driving record and ability to drive a state vehicle; and Required to travel up to 20% of the work period. PREFER: Masters degree in Architecture, with an emphasis on Historic Preservation or Architectural History; KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Effective verbal and written communication, human relations and organizational skills; Effective critical thinking skills; Understanding of construction contracting and building practices. Ability to supervise architectural, engineering, and other technical consultants and construction contractors; Knowledge of historic preservation standards and practices; Skill in providing customer service excellence to both internal and external customers; Skill in operating a personal computer with word processing, database and spreadsheet software; Ability to analyze problems, evaluate alternatives and recommend effective solutions; Ability to physically inspect all areas of historic structure, including roofs, attics and crawlspaces; Ability to work in a setting requiring self-motivation/cooperative decision-making and to work effectively with diverse groups of people; Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines while maintaining extreme attention to detail; Ability to prioritize and attend to multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously with strong attention to detail and a high standard of quality; Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment; Ability to adapt successfully and quickly to change and deliver quality results in a timely manner; Ability to plan, organize and work independently, as well as within a team environment; Ability to train others; Ability to read architectural plans and specifications; Ability to process information in a logical manner and to assess validity; Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion; and Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality. REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION, OR LICENSURE:Must have or obtain a valid Drivers License and Defensive Driving Course to be able to operate state vehicles. Must be registered as an Architect by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners. ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: This position is housed in a state building near the state capitol in Austin and may have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve walking; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping and bending; performing tasks requiring fine motor skills and coordination; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. In addition to office work, duties will include evaluating historic structures, which may involve entering attics, crawlspaces, and other dark, damp or confined spaces, as well as climbing ladders and walking on roofs. Work may involve extended periods working outdoors in hot or cold conditions. Work includes visiting active construction sites where loud noises, dust, and uneven walking surfaces may be encountered. Applicants must be willing to travel and overnight travel is often required. This position attends and sometimes presents at conferences, meetings and workshops, requiring evening and weekend work hours. Travel typically requires driving, although some air travel is also expected.
