Job Description:

This is entry level professional services and scientific work in the field of Engineering performing a variety of moderately complex engineering functions in support of construction and maintenance of public works structures, systems, and facilities and transportation engineering.

The following tasks are unique and specific to the aviation industry requirements of this position:

  • Airport Inspections: The Assistant Transportation Engineer (ATE) will be required to conduct annual inspections at 30 general aviation airports in the state of Maine that are part of the National Air System. Annual safety inspections are required at these airports to ensure safe, obstruction clear approaches exist for active runways, as well as reviewing the operational condition of all pavement surfaces at the airports.

  • Project Status Tracking: The Assistant Engineer is the primary point of contact for advising on engineering projects at state public airports. The ATE is the primary liaison between MaineDOT, the airport Sponsor, and the FAA for the engineering review of airport infrastructure projects.

  • Independent Government Estimates: The ATE performs Independent Government Estimates on planned infrastructure projects at general aviation airports. The IGE’s serve as a professional guidance to provide municipalities with a fair and reasonable estimate to be used in negotiations on infrastructure costs.

To be minimally qualified for this position candidates must provide evidence of the following experience:

A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or closely related field –OR- non-engineering college graduates and non-degreed candidates must possess a Certification of Engineer-Intern as issued by the State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers.
