What is it that we do at Colonial Pipeline Company?

Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

The preferred location for the Training Specialist is at Colonial’s Alpharetta office; though this position may be based at any of Colonial Pipeline Company’s other locations. This position travels up to 30% to the various Colonial locations, with the expectation of being in the Alpharetta office monthly or as needed. If you are interested in being based at another location other than your current location, relocation is at the candidate’s expense.

About the Training Specialist (or Senior) Position

As a Technical Training Specialist, you will partner with Stakeholders in the development, implementation, and maintenance of Colonial’s Technical Training Programs and initiatives. You will work closely with fellow team members to enhance the competencies of individual employees by determining effective training solutions that support and align with business objectives. The Training Specialist will provide oversight and ensure that technical training needs are assessed, prioritized, developed, and delivered in a manner that supports Colonial's values and regulatory requirements.

In addition, a Senior Training Specialist will lead functional teams and projects in solving complex issues and making data-based decisions and leverage personal operational knowledge and expertise to drive learning activities directed at both employee competencies and technical skills.

What You Get to Do:

  • Engage and consult with business partners to gain a deep understanding of business unit objectives, key initiatives, talent strategies, organizational challenges, and desired results.

  • Conduct needs analyses to assess the state of the business, and identify key performance and skills/knowledge gaps.

  • Define, document, and present recommended gap improvement strategies to stakeholders.

  • Execute technical training improvement strategies and partner with key stakeholders, as appropriate, to drive organizational results for non-technical training solutions.

  • Create and assemble content material described in the training design phase.

  • Create and implement site and program-specific training initiatives in collaboration with operations.

  • Seek to review and refine existing training material, conduct pilot testing and evaluation, and collaborate with stakeholders to develop an implementation plan.

  • Ensure the stated goals of the learning process meet the required business needs.

  • Determine if learners meet the new performance standard after training completion.

  • Manage the design, development, implementation, and ongoing review/approval of training materials/content and processes to ensure deliverables meet standards of excellence and consistency for effective learning.

  • Senior Training Specialists will also partner with client groups to determine if complex performance-related deficiencies are related to a lack of skill and/or knowledge.

  • Senior will partner with the training content owners to ensure that current training content is sound, with clear learning objectives that are covered in the training content

  • Senior will conduct Level 3 Training Evaluations (including observations, drop-ins, spot-checks, and interviews) to determine the degree to which training is applied to the job.

  • Senior will conduct Level 4 Training Evaluations (including observations, drop-ins, spot-checks, and interviews) of the degree to which training drives the targeted outcomes (ROI/ROE).

  • Senior will manage learning and development improvement initiatives using data.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) from an accredited education institution.

  • Ideally, 3 - 8+ years of pipeline operations experience or a combination of training/development and pipeline operations experience.

  • Demonstrate advanced expertise and knowledge in operations, and demonstrate knowledge of PHMSA Part 195, OQ, and CRM programs.

  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time, and at the Alpharetta office monthly or as needed.

  • Knowledge of each phase of the instructional design process, i.e., assessment, design, development, implementation, and evaluation, and a working knowledge of adult learning theory.

  • Skilled in web-based applications for collaboration and facilitation, e.g., WebEx, Skype, social media sites, etc.

  • Ability to develop change management deliverables (e.g., Communications Plan, etc.).

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; will consider a combination of experience and/or education.

  • Ideally, 8 - 10+ years of combined pipeline operations experience and learning & development to include diverse responsibilities, program management/coordination, technical training, and/or project management.

  • Moderate operational knowledge that includes an understanding of HMI (Human Machine Interface), station software systems, alarm management, PLC, and batch scheduling.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

  • Knowledgeable with data literacy concepts.

  • Ability to mentor and influence junior team members.

  • Lead teams or projects with guidance in only the most complex situations.

  • Makes sound independent decisions in urgent and non-routine situations.
